Melbourne heavy metal legends King Parrot are a band that have had an incredible few years of touring, with over five trips to the U.S including recent stints supporting Cattle Decapitation and Superjoint. The band also have a few solid releases under their belt and a reputation for intense live shows. However, its indisputable what has also taken them far beyond their hometown is some truly spectacular music videos that have generated their own catchphrases and have featured everything from pissing in a cop’s mouth to a hysterical scene with Slatts in bed with Philip Anselmo. Singer Matt Young spoke to the Void to give some insights on the making of each clip and his own personal favourites.
King Parrot – Shit On The Liver (2012)
What you like best about it: That it’s original, creepy and kinda bizarre.
What has surprised you about the response to it: The one-liners mostly, we always have people at our shows quoting that stuff to us.
Were there any fun surprises or hilarious incidents on set: It was stupid hot the day we filmed it, and we were walking down Smith St Collingwood with a camera crew, blasting the song and screaming while doing it. it was a sight to behold.
Do you think it had an impact on your career and if so, how? Definitely helped u s… It’s still the only song a lot of people know from us.
“Home Is Where The Gutter Is” 2015
What you like best about it: I love Squizzy in it. He was so great at being the homeless bum. He really did a killer job.
What has surprised you about the response to it: Not too much really, I love that video, it was so much fun to make and I think people seem to enjoy it too.
Were there any fun surprises or hilarious incidents on set: The pissing in the mouth scene was a blast. I always wanted to have pissing in a cop’s mouth in a video, and I finally got my wish … Even though I had to be the cop.
Like A Rat (2015)
What you like best about it: That I got to write and direct it, and to have a legend like Phil Anselmo in the video was heaps of fun.
What has surprised you about the response to it: No surprises though we knew it would get some traction, and we were a little nervous working with all new crew in the US, but I think it turned out fine.
Were there any fun surprises or hilarious incidents on set: Just the fact that Slatts and Phil were in bed together had me rolling around the floor in fits of hysterics. It was gold.
What are three music videos you personally think are amazing examples of the artform (ideally Australian but OK if not) and why do you like them?
Cosmic Psychos – Fuckwit City (2015)
Matt Young: A great new video shot by my friend Matt Weston. I love the simplicity of the band, and Macca is a genius when it comes to that. He does a great job of being effortless and this video really captures that about the Cosmic Psychos.
Batpiss – Loose Screws (2013)
Matt Young: The Batpiss lads did a great job on this one, and I think the concept was really clever. The last scene is great, just go and watch it.
Blood Duster – Piss Stomper (2008)
Matt Young: A great old video by the legends from Blood Duster. The goat, piss stomping, mud and stupid shit. It was a video that was made really well and they also do a werewolf dance.
