Brisbane brawling rock and roll two-piece Marville are premiering their brand new clip for “9 Iron” with us on The Void today! It’s a killer video with sick live cuts meshed with lo-fi animation magic. Ash Kerley of Marville spoke to us about the story behind it, Brisbane’s firing music scene, Marville’s fantasy festival and more. Check out our recent Brisbane rock ‘n’ roll feature interview series here.
Christina: What was the concept for the clip?
Ash: I’m pretty into 1980s Doctor Who… The clip is a not so subtle love letter to my favourite character. We filmed the live stuff ourselves at rehearsal, got my mate Luke Brook to create the animation and then I cut it all together.
Christina: What are your favourite videos?
Ash:I can still remember the first time I saw the video clip for Dirty Jeans (Magic Dirt) on Fly Tv. I think I would have been in grade 8 at the time and I connected with it instantly. I went back to school on Monday prancing around playing air guitar and singing the line ‘I haven’t washed my jeans in 3 months or more’. I don’t think I even remembered the tune at the time, just the sudsy laundromat and that line.
Christina: What’s Brisbane like for bands at the moment?
Ash:The Brisbane scene is such a prolific and supportive environment. We’re really proud to be a part of it. There are so many amazing bands- HITS, Some Jerks, New Jack Rubys, Stress of Leisure, Los Huevos, The Steady As She Goes, Sabrina Lawrie and the Hunting Party, Shrewms, I could go on for DAYS! So much good Rock’n’Roll in this town- I think the weather helps!
Christina: What’s your dream festival lineup?
Ash: I think if you could chuck all of those bands on a lineup together and host it at a bowls club with cheap beer and free bowls I would be in heaven.
Either that or a gig that is just two-pieces. That way we could put the drums and the amps side by side and Doug (and all the other drummers) would get their well deserved time in the sunand not have to hide behind us guitar dudes.
Christina: What surprised you about how it came out?
Ash: I was pretty stoked that it actually worked!
Brisbane Rock N Roll Barbeque Video Feature Playlist:
Christina: What might we not know about it when we watch it?
Ash: I think a lot of people don’t realise what a laborious process animation is. We had a very limited budget and very little time, but Luke came up with the goods. He’s a top bloke.
Christina: What is this band an outlet for, what does it feel to play in it?
Ash: Marville has been my main project ever since I’ve been making music. There have been name changes, lineup changes, stretches of time where it has been a solo project. I honestly can’t imagine my life without this band and these songs.
