Steel Panther on Sex, Drugs & Heavy Metal

By christina · On June 30, 2016

LA glam metal comedy band Steel Panther are balls deep in creating a TV pilot and a new record. The band also just stormed Australia one more time. To celebrate, I caught up with drummer Stix for the Riffing with Christina podcast and have also compiled some of the most ridiculous moments of the Steel Panther interviews I’ve hosted over the years, many of which took place in the middle of the Australian Soundwave tour. Sex, drugs and heavy metal are covered extensively in this ten minutes of power YouTube feature, which is combined with the Stix chat in audio form.

Satchel [Guitar] on the worst ever Steel Panther guest star onstage [YouTube]:

Satchel: C.C. DeVille. C.C., if you’re watching, I still love you dude but remember that time you were so drunk … he was drunk and high, which was bitching. But sometimes you get drunk and high and you forget who you are and where you’re at. And he jumped on our drumset, trying to play drums. And CC, he can barely play the guitar and he is a guitarist and he was on the drums and he was horrible. Remember that? We were like “C.C., stop playing the drums! and he was WOOHOO!” We were like dude we are trying to put on a show and get laid and you are making noise on the drums. We had to get security to pull him off by all of his arms and legs.

Drummer Stix on what they’re doing in 2016 [Podcast]:

Stix: We filmed a pilot. It was a crazy, crazy filming session. It was twelve hours long and we filmed a lot of stuff and the people that we have in it are pretty amazing. I can’t give it away, but its awesome.

Christina: Is it music or comedy or both?

Stix: It’s everything. It’s all that Steel Panther have to offer. We’re not … well, actually we have more to offer than what we filmed because we did not film naked or having sex.

Christina: What kind of things are you making (for the new album)?

Stix: I think you’ll be enjoying lyrics about things that make people smile like sex, drugs and rock and roll because that’s pretty much what Steel Panther does and there’s no reason for us to venture out anywhere else because what else is there, really?

I gotta tell you, what’s funny to me. Sometimes we get asked: “Do you ever want to write a real song or a serious song?” My answer is always the same, No. No, because it’s f***ing rock and roll and its meant to be fun. It amazes me because you have artists like Taylor Swift or Adele. The thing that they do is they write about relationships. Good and bad and in between. And really, there’s nothing else that they write about. But I don’t ever read an interview where people go: “So Adele, are you interested in writing anything else?”

Christina: Like are you interested in writing anything about sex (laughs)?

Stix: Yeah. “Would you ever write a song about boning?”

Christina: What’s happened to pop music I reckon is … they probably make more money from something like Diet Coke than from touring. So they have to think about their sponsors when they’re writing music to make sure it doesn’t offend anyone. At least Rihanna looks like she has a bit of sex and drugs. At least she looks like she’s having a good time.

Stix: I’m not mad at Taylor Swift or Adele. I get it. Those kind of artists, they write about what they write about, and we do what we do.

Christina: And I like that, though I have had a thought that I’d like to see Taylor Swift have a G.G. Allin moment like just one day break some bottles on the floor and roll around in broken glass. That would be pretty good.

Stix: Like eat her own vomit onstage? That would be pretty cool.

Christina: Which pop star do you think would be a secret freak in the sack?

Stix: A secret freak?

Christina: Yeah, like the most twisted. Like they’ve got a sex dungeon and leather. This is a serious question. This is serious journalism.

Stix: I’m truly trying to think of who would be a super freak. Well I don’t think it would be Katy Perry. Taylor Swift seems asexual to me. She seems not sexy at all to me. Like very super square. She just seems too worried about everything.

Christina: What about Britney Spears?

Stix: No. You know who I think would be a freak more than Britney Spears? I think Adele. I think she’d be like “you want to do what? OK, let’s do it.”

Christina: Satchel once told me CC DeVille was the worst guest star they ever had. What was your favourite?

Stix: Pink was my favourite. She’s super cool, super talented, she killed it. She’s not a successful artist by accident. She has it.

Christina: Who was the worst?

Stix: Jessica Simpson. She was shockingly bad. I know that there’s a lot of artists and musicians that aren’t good at their instrument and they have succeeded in spite of that. But she was so bad she made me question why I was a musician. It made me go if that level of awful-ness can succeed, why am I doing what I’m doing.

Christina: What’s your favourite drummer joke?

Stix: There’s so many. My favourite drummer joke is: What was the last thing the drummer said before he got fired? Hey guys, check out this song I wrote.”

Christina: If you were going to go out in a blaze of glory, how would you go out?

Stix: If I was going to go out in a blaze of glory, I would ride an elephant into a shallow shark-infested pond and I would try to step on all the sharks with my elephant but the shark would bite the elephant’s feet and the elephant would fall and I would land on one of the sharks. And I would have a machete in my hand and I would stick a machete up in one of the shark’s gills and I would kill one of the sharks but there would be seven left and I would be ripped apart by sharks in a shallow pond.
