Protest Music Most Triumphant The Void Spotify Playlist
By christina · On December 24, 2017In this week’s edition of the Void Community Playlist series, a motley crue of musicians, listeners, experts and aficionados that make up the Void community across punk, rock, reggae, hip hop and lots more have assembled over two hours of the most seismic protest songs in history. There’s incendiary punk rock from Millions of Dead Cops and some magic from Propagandhi’s fire up classic, “Less Talk, More Rock.” There’s Jimi Hendrix live, eviscerating the Vietnam War via some axeman riffage and Crosby, Stills and Nash speaking their own truth. There’s Midnight Oil – an Australian band that fought for indigenous rights in song, infamously performing at the Sydney Olympics wearing shirts emblazoned with “Sorry” in solidarity with the Aboriginal people who we brutally murdered for hundreds of fucking years. There’s even some classic hip hop in the mix via N.W.A, Public Enemy and Australia’s own Combat Wombat. Nina Simone and her civil rights anthem “Mississippi Goddamn gets pride of place – she stepped dangerously into an arena few were brave to tread and copped all kinds of limitations to use her profile to talk about real shit.
Protest music is critical. When the world is run by extreme right wing stuffed shirts (and America isn’t the only place this is happening) due to a fractured global progressive movement, protest music is critical. The Reagan era produced some of the most angry, violent, brilliant and savage music of all time. In the face of fear and division, we can only hope music can be the uniting force it should be.
