What was the most intense, brutal, insane show legendary GWAR member Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie ever witnessed? Australian-born lunatics Lubricated Goat. In another random educational, enlightening and rather ridiculous feature, we ask Brisbane bands (and Beetle Bar promoter Ariana Urosevic) to dig deep in their brains for some grimy excellent gems of Australian punk rock goodness. So you can enjoy these curated, spat-on, crumpled up songs for yourself. This week’s also features some sweet recommendation from GWAR icon Dave Brockie. May he rest in peace, with Lemmy, forevermore.
Dave Brockie (and the Beetle Bar’s Ari Urosevic) on Lubricated Goat:
Ariana (Beetle Bar Promoter My 3 favourite Lubricated Goat releases: Paddock of love – 1988. Psychedelicatessen 1990. EP: Schadenfruede (88ish?) I love them because every song and every release is so different. Stu Spasm is, well … Stu Spasm. I have never seen the Goat live, and not sure i will ever get the chance, but its on my bucket list! i gained a whole new appreciation a couple of years ago when GWAR’s David Brockie told this story:
Dave Brockie: “Probably the most incredible fucked up thing I’ve seen in the history of fucking rock and roll. I was in San Francisco and it was actually a band from Australia called Lubricated Goat. They took a dead goat and put it into a freezer for about three weeks until it was frozen solid. They brought it on stage and they hit it with a sledgehammer and that thing broke apart like a piece of glass. Throuhout the show, all the little slivers melted. So basically what you had was little goat bits everywhere. That was the most fucked up thing I’ve ever seen.”
Ariana: “Frozen chunks of goat flew across the crowd and decor, where it slowly and progressively thawed out … people were slipping over in bits of goat. Thats a fuckin’ stage gimmick that is.”
Who is Lubricated Goat? “Since its depraved and characteristically ugly Australian birthing in 1986, Stu Spasm’s Lubricated Goat has remained a cock in the ass of decency. Stu has worn the devil’s red cloak proudly, through a revolving door of musical confederates, trans-Pacific moves, bizarre and unrepentant television nudity, a celebrated underground rock marriage and divorce, six albums, countless tours, even a stabbing. His vision remains unchanged.”
If you wish to experience the magic of Lubricated Goat, you CAN buy Lubricated Goat’s “The Great Old Ones” on Amazon. Go on. Live dangerously.
Josh Murphy (Flangipanis & Bottlecock) on 3 Awesome Angry Australian Artists:
The Stabs – Dead Wood. (Melbourne)
Classic Australian hate-fuelled rock, we do it so well here. To be listened to when Rowland S Howard is feeling too cheery for you. Get it here from their Bandcamp for FOURTEEN DOLLARS. That’s less than three beers. And you can listen to it forever, or until the apocalypse. Whatever comes first, it would be an apt soundtrack. It’s out on Homeless Records. Find them on Facebook here. Or buy it now. Do it.
Pure Evil Trio – Cognitive Dissonance.
(Sydney & Wollongong).
Not their most obnoxious outing, it almost steps into what one could call ‘listenable’ territory, but is still solid start to finish. Posting this over the rest of their fantastic discography because it’s a 7″ record in a risograph cover and that’s pretty bloody cool. Get it here for ELEVEN dollars.
No Anchor/Dead – Split (Brisbane).
Any release by either of these bands could been here for great music/nicely done physical releases. But this is an easy way to sneak both in at once. The physical version of this is beautiful, We Empty Rooms nailed it as always. Get it here for TEN dollars.
Phil (Brisbane):
The Scam. Great Aussie thrash punk.
Witch Fight. The best stoner fuzz punk going. Two piece but thick as fuck. Astonishing tales of …. is still the best Aussie release I’ve ever heard.
High Tension. Probably Melbourne’s best band
